GentleLASE System FDA Cleared For Permanent Hair Reduction

Long-term Clinical Study Highlights Alexandrite Laser Technology's Efficacy

Business/Technology Editors and Health/Medical Writers WAYLAND, Mass.--(BW HealthWire)--June 1, 2000--

Candela Corporation  reported that the GentleLASE(R) system received clearance from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration to claim that it achieves "permanent hair reduction."

According to the FDA, "permanent hair reduction" is defined as the long-term stable reduction in the number of hairs regrowing after a treatment regime. The GentleLASE demonstrated this capability in a long-term clinical study.

Gerard E. Puorro, Candela's president and CEO, said, "The FDA clearance represents a significant milestone for GentleLASE in the rapidly growing cosmetic laser market. We are pleased that doctors can now advertise these impressive findings when they talk to patients who demand permanent hair reduction with the most advanced technology."

"The long-term clinical study began almost two years ago. The clinical data have been accepted for publication and will soon be published in a prestigious dermatological journal."

"We will continue to sponsor long-term clinical studies like this to demonstrate the superiority of Candela's technology and maintain our commitment to providing innovative, breakthrough products such as our recently introduced Vbeam™ laser for the treatment of vascular lesions." Thomas Rohrer, M.D., Director of Dermatologic Surgery at the Boston University Medical Center, commented, "We've been looking forward to sharing this important information with our patients for some time now, and we are very pleased to hear that the FDA has validated what we have known for a long time."

Jeffrey Dover, M.D., Director of SkinCare Physicians of Chestnut Hill, and Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School said, "Candela's GentleLASE is safe, effective and elegant in the treatment of unwanted hair. The recent FDA clearance for long-term hair reduction allows physicians to answer questions about long-term treatment results from today's very informed patients."

Candela's GentleLASE system was first introduced in 1997, and has earned a reputation for safety, speed, efficacy and reliability. The GentleLASE system is the first hair removal device to offer a proprietary Dynamic Cooling Device™ which selectively cools the upper layers of skin prior to applying the laser pulse, minimizing pain and reducing thermal exposure to the epidermis and upper layers of the skin. The system has received wide acceptance among dermatologists, plastic surgeons, ENTs and OB-GYNs around the world.
